Technology & innovation

The first technological project for raising awareness through technology in aquaculture.

AQUAVET led the development and testing of the Tilapia Welfare App — Egypt’s first digital tool for assessing and tracking tilapia welfare indicators on farms. The app enabled farmers to record data, receive automated alerts, and access practical guidance.

Testing revealed a knowledge gap in interpreting the water quality drivers behind welfare outcomes — which directly shaped the FAI Water Quality Study, where farmers were equipped with full testing kits and trained to measure dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia and temperature independently.

Digital welfare monitoring

On-farm data recording, automated alerts and practical guidance.

Farmer-led measurement

Testing kits and training so farms detect problems before the fish show them.

Sustainability

Promoting sustainable aquaculture practices to enhance the industry’s long-term viability.

Sustainability at AQUAVET is not a separate programme — it is the reason the technical work is designed the way it is.

Water & resource efficiency

Water quality management and treatment that keeps ponds productive with less corrective intervention.

Welfare-driven productivity

Baseline welfare data for Egyptian tilapia systems, and the standard tools to assess it.

Environmental responsibility

Assessment of agricultural runoff impacts on aquatic life, and science-based conservation recommendations.

Knowledge that stays

Training that reduces dependency — farmers who can measure, interpret and decide for themselves.
