Baseline Survey on Aquaculture Value Chains under PRO-SURE-AQUA

Mapping the structure and challenges of Egypt’s aquaculture value chains — from producer to consumer — across four governorates.

Case study

Overview

Mapping the structure and challenges of Egypt’s aquaculture value chains — from producer to consumer — across four governorates.

The challenge

Egypt’s aquaculture value chains were not systematically documented. Without a baseline of production practices, market dynamics and consumer behaviour, technical interventions risked being designed against assumptions rather than evidence.

The solution

Conducted under the JICA-funded PRO-SURE-AQUA Project, this baseline survey mapped the structure and challenges of Egypt’s aquaculture value chains across Kafr El-Sheikh, Beheira, Cairo and Minya. Focusing on producers, wholesalers, transporters, retailers — especially women retailers — and consumers, the study documented production practices, market dynamics, handling methods, pricing behaviours and consumer preferences. AQUAVET led field surveys and interviews.

Scope

  • Producers
  • Wholesalers
  • Transporters
  • Retailers (incl. women retailers)
  • Consumers
The impact

The work revealed critical stakeholders, gender-specific barriers and opportunities for improving efficiency and competitiveness. The findings now serve as the foundation for designing targeted technical interventions and monitoring progress throughout the project’s implementation phase.
