Sustainability at AQUAVET is not a separate programme. It is the reason the technical work — welfare assessment, water quality monitoring, resource efficiency, training — is designed the way it is.

Our position

Sustainable aquaculture is a production question before it is an environmental one.

Water that is managed well produces more fish. Fish that are handled well convert feed more efficiently. Farmers who can measure their own ponds need fewer emergency interventions. The environmental outcome and the commercial outcome move in the same direction.

That is the logic behind every project on this site — from the ecological assessment of Lake El-Burullus to the farmer-led FAI Water Quality Study.

How it shows up in the work

Sustainable aquaculture

Welfare assessment across the full production cycle, baseline welfare data for Egyptian tilapia systems, and standard tools farms can apply themselves.

Resource efficiency

Water quality management that keeps ponds inside a safe operating range, and feed additives that convert more of the ration into growth rather than waste.

Environmental responsibility

Evaluation of agricultural runoff impacts on aquatic life, biodiversity assessment, and science-based recommendations for sustainable lake management and conservation.

Climate & stress resilience

Emergency oxygen support, anti-stress nutrition and early-warning behavioural indicators — so farms absorb heat events and oxygen crashes rather than lose stock to them.

Knowledge that stays on the farm

Training designed to reduce dependency. Farmers equipped to measure dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia and temperature, interpret the result, and act without waiting for an advisor.

Collaboration across the sector

The “Hand in Hand” initiative brings private companies, governmental bodies and non-profit organisations together around the sustainable development of the field.

Solar-powered aeration and pumping are increasingly part of how Egyptian farms manage energy cost and resilience. This section is reserved for AQUAVET’s work in that area.
