Overview
A farmer-led approach to water quality monitoring, testing whether putting measurement directly in farmers' hands changes how farms are managed.
The challenge
The Tilapia Welfare App revealed a critical knowledge gap in farmers' ability to interpret the water quality drivers behind welfare outcomes. Farmers could record what was happening to their fish, but not reliably explain why.
The solution
The study compared self-monitoring farms with advisor-led farms across four governorates to determine whether hands-on measurement, continuous data collection and sustained feedback could drive long-term improvements in farm-management behaviour. Farmers were equipped with full water-testing kits and trained to independently measure dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia and temperature — enabling them to detect problems early, understand cause-and-effect relationships, and make faster, more informed decisions.

The impact
