Tilapia Welfare Project

A full-production-cycle assessment of fish welfare, and the standard tools to measure it.

Case study

Overview

A full-production-cycle assessment of fish welfare, and the standard tools to measure it.

The challenge

Welfare in Egyptian tilapia systems had no baseline and no standard method of assessment — leaving no way to link welfare practice to productivity outcomes.

The solution

In collaboration with Ethical Seafood Research (ESR) and Kafr El-Sheikh University, the project evaluated fish welfare across the full production cycle, integrating assessments of water quality, feeding, handling, transport and pre-harvest practices. AQUAVET played a leading role in developing standard welfare assessment tools and delivering hands-on training for farmers, enabling them to adopt improved management practices.

Scope

  • Water quality
  • Feeding
  • Handling
  • Transport
  • Pre-harvest practices
The impact

The project raised national awareness of welfare-driven productivity, generated baseline welfare data for Egyptian tilapia systems, and laid the groundwork for future digital welfare monitoring tools.
